Bonus Post: T-shirt Printing Size Ratios
December 26th, 2008 Posted in For Screen PrintersHow many sizes should you print per order? You don’t want to print too many, but you also want to make sure you have enough. Such a daunting task… read on!
It’s a BONUS POST! Actually this is the first bonus post. Bonus Posts are ones that are published directly by PW Apparel and one that was not scheduled on our article calendar.
Being an active user of the T-shirt Forums, we see the question of size ratios come up a lot. People are always wanting to know how many of each size they should print. Simple answer-it depends. Yes that’s not too helpful but it depends completely on what your market is. You would have a different size setup for a biker event than if you were going to sell at a wedding gown show (just examples).
Below are the most common price mixes that we use, these are figured on ratios out of ten. For example, if you were printing for a general adult population event and you were planning to print 100 shirt, it would be ideal to print 25 small, 20 medium, 30 large, 15 Xlarge and 10 XXlarge
For the General Adult Population (about 50/50 mix of men and women, using all men’s sizes)
2.5 - S
2 - M
3 - L
1.5 - XL
1 - XXL
For more of a female dominated mix (using men’s sizes)
4 – S
2.5 – M
2 – L
1 – XL
0.5 – XXL
Because youth sizes fluctuate greatly depending on the blank you use, we will not including them into this post. Also depending on your market and geographic location you may need to change this to fit your locale. Generally more southern states use more larger shirts than states in the Northeast or California.
I hope this helps. And for any of you readers who are always looking for helpful hints at printing but have not yet checked out the T-shirt Forums, shame on you. It truly is a great resource for our industry and I highly reccommend that you join.
