Tips to Lower your T-shirt Printing Bill
December 20th, 2008 Posted in Public PostsTip #3: Use White or Light Colored Garments
Using white and light colored garments will help you save substantially money off of your t-shirt bill for two reasons.
1) It costs less for your printer to purchase blanks when they are White or Light Grey. Colored shirts add nearly $.50 to the purchase price of acquiring the shirts that your printer will use to print on. Without a doubt this cost is being carried on to your and can sometimes add up to $1.25 to the price of each shirt.
2) Preprinting. On dark shirts (especially black!) your printer will need to print a base layer of white in order for the other colors to be seen correctly. This base print will usually count as a completely seperate color and depending on how your printer does business can add the price of screen and film costs to your bill along with the actual charge for the ink.
If you can, stick to white, especially if you have a very limited budget. This will allow your printer to save money on the cost of the shirt, as well as avoid needing a base coat printed. Make sure that the cost of savings is worth using only white though. If you are selling a shirt commercially it may not be advised that you do this as you will probably only save $.50 a shirt with the volume of ordering that you do and the perceived value of the shirt/design may be lower.
Tip #4: Order in Large Quantities
If you have ever filled out a t-shirt request form, you know that the amount you order plays a big part in the price of each shirt. There are a few reasons to this, one is obvious, we give a discount to those who order in bulk. Also, it saves money per shirt by spreading any screen or design charges out over more shirts. Many of you may have experienced minimums with certain printers. The reason for the minimums is that it takes us labor time to setup each job. We do not want to spend our time setting up the press for several 1-2 shirt orders when we can spend that same amount of time preparing the press for a 300 shirt job.
Most will see quantity breaks at 24, 48, 72, 144, 216, and so on. The biggest break will usually be at 72 pieces. The reasoning behind this is because generally our suppliers place the case quantities at 72 pieces and this is where printers will get the best prices for their blanks.
If you have the finances available and you plan to place another order at a later time for the same design, we think you should purchase all shirts at once. You will save substantial bucks when you purchase in bulk.
